Pipe bursting is a lateral boring method used to replace buried sewer, water and natural gas lines without the need for a traditional construction trench.
This modern method utilizes launching and receiving pits to replace the trench needed by conventional pipe-laying.
As the diagram illustrates, a cable pulls a bursting head and expander that pushes the old pipe out of the way to make room for the new seamless pipeline being pulled behind it. The new pipeline is then attached at both ends, completing the process.
Another minimal impact method of replacing your sewer line is with directional boring aka horizontal directional drilling or HDD.
